Terra Alta |
Region Information > Terra Alta
Terra Alta is located in inland southern Tarragona, where low mountains, rolling hills and valleys run south to the border with Teruel province.
The Terra Alta region is located next to Priorat, enjoying the same climate conditions and altitude as the Priorat wine region.
The mountain peaks here rise to 962 metres, although the vines are planted chiefly on the plateaux and valley floors. Here the topsoil gives way to limestone and clay, low in organic content, with a significant proportion of larger elements that give good aeration and drainage.
The climate in the DO is a mix of Mediterranean and continental. Summers are hot and winters are very cold. The annual average temperature is 16.4ºC and rainfall is approximately 400 mm. There is a risk of late spring frosts. It is important to note the key influence of the cierzo, a dry wind from the Ebro Valley that keeps the vines and their fruit healthy.
Reds and whites wines are strong and alcoholic.
Vine varieties
Red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Peluda, Syrah, Merlot, Samsó, Cabernet Franc and Tempranillo.
White: Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Parellada, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin, Pedro Ximénez and Macabeo.
