Varietals > Red > Petit Verdot
Also known as Carmelin, Petit Verdau, and Verdot Rouge.
Petit Verdot is a high-quality red-wine grape that originates from France, grown mainly in the Bordeaux region where it is generally blended with Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon to add colour and structure.
Petit Verdot produces full bodied wines with concentrated flavours, lifted violet aromas finishing with firm integrated tannins.
Petit Verdot ripens very late and sometimes doesn't mature at all, a trait that's prompted a number of châteaux in Bordeaux to eliminate it from their vineyards.
Recently, there's been a minor planting revival by some of the more quality-conscious producers. Small amounts of Petit Verdot are planted in Chile and California.
It is just starting to be used to make wines in Spain.
