Varietals > Merlot
Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and the basis for many fine, highly aromatic wines.
It comes from the Bordeaux region. After Cabernet Sauvignon, it is the most widespread grape variety in the world. In Spain, it is grown mainly in Ribera del Duero DO and the regions of Catalonia and Navarre. |
