The Mencia varietal has been planted in the Bierzo region since Roman times and some believe it to be related to Cabernet Franc.
It is able to thrive in cool climates and at high altitudes and is able to demonstrate a sense of terroir while being very fruit-forward at the same time. Produces excellent red and rosé wines, with a diversity of primary aromas, producing smooth and velvety high quality wines.
It is most widely planted in León (68%), Zamora, Lugo and Orense provinces. It is considered a main variety in Valdeorras and Bierzo DOs.
