Varietals > Blanco > Macabeo
Also called Viura
Two theories exist as to the origin of this varietal, one is that it is from the Middle East, the other is from Aragon in Spain. Whatever the origins, generally the wines made from this grape today are lighter in style, drier, relatively higher in acid, not easly oxidized, and are aromatic.
Macabeo is in Spain an important variety for the production of white wine. The wines have a good acidity and a smell of flowers. The wines lose their taste and fruitiness relatively easily and are at their best when consumed young.
In the Penedés region of Spain (located in the area around Barcelona), Viura/Macabeo is a predominant grape used in the production of cava.
Mainly found in Badajoz, La Rioja, Tarragona and Zaragoza, this is considered a main variety in Calatayud, Conca de Barberá, Costers del Segre, Navarra, Penedés, Rioja, Somontano, Tarragona and Terra Alta DOs.
