Also known as Mazuelo
A Spanish variety of grape that originated in Cariñena, Aragón and was later transplanted to Sardinia, Italy and France.
When it is grown on a slope, to lower the yield, or grown on very old, low-yielding vines, it can produce a wine whith good body, color and character with a characteristic harshness and astringency that disminishes with age.
Produces robust, balanced wines. An excellent complement to Garnacha, it is widely planted in Cataluña and La Rioja, where it is known as "Mazuela". It is also considered a main variety in Calatayud, Costers del Segre, Penedés, Tarragona and Terra Alta DOs. |
