Bodegas Mariscal,

Bodegas
Mariscal is a family-run cellar in Mondejar in
the Guadalajara area, under the D.O. Mondejar.
Bodegas Mariscal was founded
by the grandfather of the present day Mariscal brothers in 1913. From
agricultural roots, the business has passed on from father to son
until the brothers Mariscal formed the commercial business directed
from the location where it is to be found today.
The ambition of the Mariscal
Brothers was to be granted recognition of the guarantee of the
"Denominación of Origen" for their wines and the region. It took ten
years of constant struggle against the administration and the
prejudices of the neighbouring growers to convince them that the
"Denominación of Origen" was a necessity in order to protect and
promote their vineyards. During this period some 300 hectares of
Cencibel Red - the best variety of Cencibel grape - disappeared due to
the influence of government grants.
Today they can say, with great
satisfaction, that the "Denominación de Origen" was officially granted
on the 4th of October 1996. This "Denominación de Origen Mondéjar"
covers an area of 1.600 hectares of vineyards (corresponding to 80% of
the Mondéjar region) and includes 14 villages. The region of Mondéjar
can be found some 65 kilometres to the east of Madrid in the direction
of Valencia. This area, known as the "Alcarria Baja", is part of
Castilla la Mancha and enjoys a height of 720 metres above sea level
which is ideal for the development of fine vineyards. The grape
varieties which are cultivated are the red Cencibel or
"Tempranillo", which covers 40% of the land area, followed by the
Cabernet Sauvignon variety. Another white variety,
Torrontes, is
cultivated to produce the sweet "Mistela" wine liquor that is much
appreciated with pastries and desserts.
