Region Information > Bierzo
The Bierzo wine region is situated in the extreme northwest of Castilla, Province of León on the frontier of Galicia and north of Portugal and covers an area of 4,100 hectares.
The vines has been planted in the region for centuries. Most of the vines are planted on extremely steep slopes at very high elevations.
Bierzo lies at the crossroads between Atlantic influences and warm, arid Castillian influences. Because many of the vines are at extremely high altitudes, the average temperatures tend to be quite cooler than most of viticultural Spain, and harvest is quite late in the year.
The Mencia grape, which is widely planted in the zone, grows extremely well at these high altitudes on rock hillsides, many of which are terraced, and almost all of which are composed of slate and very little organic material.
Vine varieties
Red: Mencía, Negra, Garnacha Tintorera, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.
White: Doña Blanca, Palomino, Malvasia and Godello.
