Region Information > Alicante
Alicante is located in a privileged geographical area of Spain between the plateau and the Mediterranean Sea. It has a warm, sunny climate with the appropriate natural conditions for growing and making wine.
The vineyards of the Alicante D.O. cover an area of 14,600 ha. They include 50 towns and villages and are concentrated in two areas:
• Around the city of
Alicante and the upper and middle basin of the Vinalopó. The role played by the Mediterranean climate in the development of the vine is decisive. The high average temperature of between 13 ºC and 18 ºC, with maximum temperatures of between 30º and 40º in summer, the high number of hours of sunshine, with 2,500 hours a year, and the low height above sea level determine the distinguishing features of the wines of Alicante. Production is based on a soil with a high content of limestone, a zero or almost zero clay content and a very low organic level combined with a wealth of minerals. These soil characteristics are conducive to the growth of the vine and the making of quality wines. Vine varieties
Red: Monastrell, Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Tintorera, Bobal, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
White: Merseguera, Moscatel de Alexandria, Macabeo, Planta Fina, Verdil, Airén, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
